4. AI-Assisted Engineering

AI-Assisted Engineering refers to the use of artificial intelligence to support human engineering work without independently assuming formal engineering authority.
AI may assist engineers by:
- Interpreting requirements and project constraints.
- Searching approved engineering knowledge.
- Identifying missing information.
- Comparing alternative configurations.
- Detecting compatibility risks.
- Preparing candidate BDL definitions.
- Calling authorized analysis and validation tools.
- Interpreting compiler reports.
- Supporting cost, schedule, risk, and lifecycle analysis.
- Generating inspection or maintenance recommendations.
- Identifying conflicts among design, manufacturing, assembly, and operational data.
- Preparing evidence packages for human review.
AI-assisted outputs shall be treated as proposals, recommendations, interpretations, or draft configurations until they pass the applicable validation, review, approval, and certification processes.
Where AI participates in an engineering workflow, the record should identify:
- The agent or model involved.
- The information and version used.
- The requested task.
- The tools invoked.
- The generated output.
- Material assumptions and uncertainty.
- Validation results.
- Human reviewers and approvals.
- Subsequent modifications.
AI assistance shall improve the quality and accessibility of engineering work without weakening traceability or professional accountability.
