78. Legacy Adapters
Stable section ID: S05-CON-005-SECTION-79 · 30 content blocks
A Legacy Adapter connects an existing non-System05 product, building system, utility, or structural component to a System05 interface.
Legacy Adapters support:
renovation;
phased adoption;
retrofit;
temporary transition;
continued use of serviceable existing equipment;
integration with regional construction systems;
avoidance of unnecessary demolition.
A Legacy Adapter shall be treated as an engineered Cartridge with at least two separately defined interfaces:
the System05-facing interface;
the legacy-facing interface.
The adapter shall declare:
exact supported legacy product or system;
field conditions required;
permitted dimensional variation;
transferred functions;
capacity limitations;
installation process;
inspection requirements;
failure behavior;
maintenance access;
remaining-life assumptions;
effect on System05 capabilities.
A generic claim such as “fits standard existing construction” is insufficient. The legacy side shall be defined through verified dimensions, materials, configurations, and condition limits.
Existing conditions shall be inspected before installation. Corrosion, deterioration, undocumented alteration, geometric variation, and hidden construction may prevent use of the adapter.
The adapter shall not cause the System05-facing side to claim capabilities that the legacy system cannot support.
Where the legacy product lacks digital identity, the adapter may create a controlled digital representation of the connected legacy asset. This representation shall clearly indicate which information was measured, assumed, inferred, or unavailable.
Adapters shall not become permanent substitutes for establishing an appropriate universal interface when repeated use demonstrates the need for a standardized solution.
Safety-critical Legacy Adapters shall require project-specific engineering review unless a sufficiently defined legacy configuration has been tested and certified.
