Interface & Cartridge Architecture

Backward Compatibility exists when a newer interface or Cartridge can interact safely with an approved older implementation without requiring unauthorized modification.

A newer implementation claiming backward compatibility shall:

recognize the older Type and version;

preserve the older controlled geometry where required;

support the mandatory earlier capabilities;

respect earlier operating limits;

prevent activation of unsupported newer functions;

preserve required safety behavior;

communicate any reduction in performance;

provide verification evidence.

Backward compatibility may be:

full;

limited to defined capabilities;

dependent upon configuration;

dependent upon a certified adapter;

unavailable.

A newer component shall not impose its higher capacity, data rate, voltage, pressure, control logic, or automation assumptions upon the older component.

If the older interface lacks machine-readable capability data, compatibility shall be established through authoritative records, physical classification, project documentation, inspection, or approved testing.

Backward compatibility claims shall identify the oldest supported version and all known restrictions.

Supporting outdated interfaces shall not be required indefinitely where continued support would introduce unacceptable safety, cybersecurity, environmental, or technical risk. Deprecation shall follow a controlled process with migration guidance.
