33. Cartridge Anatomy

A Cartridge shall be divided into defined functional zones. Not every Cartridge requires every zone, but omissions shall be explicit.
The standard Cartridge anatomy consists of the following elements:
Cartridge Body or Core The primary internal assembly performing the Cartridge’s engineering function. In a Structural Cartridge this may be a load-transfer assembly. In a Utility Cartridge it may include valves, conductors, fittings, and distribution elements. In a Smart Cartridge it may include processors and communication hardware.
Protective Shell The external enclosure protecting the internal system from impact, moisture, dust, contamination, unauthorized contact, and environmental exposure. The shell shall not be assumed to carry structural load unless designed for that function.
Host-Side Interface Face The controlled surface or zone through which the Cartridge connects to the building host. It may contain structural seats, locking features, electrical contacts, fluid ports, communication contacts, grounding, alignment datums, or sealing surfaces.
Service-Side Interface Face The interface through which the Cartridge connects to its served component or environment. This side may be standardized, application-specific, or material-specific.
Alignment Features Features establishing correct position and orientation before locking. These may include tapered guides, pins, rails, slots, keyed profiles, datum surfaces, or machine-vision markers.
Primary Retention or Lock The mechanism preventing unintended separation. In load-bearing Cartridges, the primary lock may also participate in force transfer.
Secondary Retention An independent or supplementary mechanism preventing uncontrolled release where required by criticality.
Load-Transfer Zone The region carrying structural or equipment-support loads. It shall be distinguishable from the protective shell, alignment system, and utility-contact region.
Energy and Utility Zone The region containing electrical, fluid, pneumatic, thermal, or other service connections.
Data and Control Zone The location of communication contacts, processors, controllers, memory, authentication hardware, or diagnostic access.
Environmental Seal Zone The controlled barrier against water, air, vapor, dust, smoke, sound, or contaminants.
Thermal-Control Zone Insulation, heat spreading, ventilation, heat rejection, thermal break, or fire-protection features.
Inspection Zone Windows, indicators, measurement points, test ports, removable covers, sensor access, or visual confirmation features.
Manual Service Zone Access required by an installer, inspector, or maintainer. Required tool paths and human clearances shall be defined.
Robotic Handling Zone Approved grasping, lifting, alignment, and tooling regions. Prohibited contact areas shall also be identified.
- Identification Zone A durable location for human-readable and machine-readable identity.
- Release Zone Access to approved disconnection mechanisms after safe-release conditions have been satisfied.
Drainage and Containment Zone Paths and volumes for controlling expected leakage, condensation, cleaning fluids, or internally released substances.
The internal architecture shall prevent failure in one domain from unnecessarily propagating into another. For example:
water leakage should not immediately contact energized conductors;
control wiring should not occupy an unprotected structural shear plane;
a replaceable seal should not require dismantling the primary load path;
thermal expansion should not disengage electrical contacts;
shell damage should not automatically release the primary structural lock.
Subcomponents with shorter service lives shall be replaceable without discarding the complete Cartridge where technically and economically practical.
The Cartridge documentation shall identify which elements are:
structural;
safety-critical;
replaceable;
consumable;
adjustable;
field-serviceable;
factory-serviceable;
non-serviceable.
