2. Interface Philosophy

The System05 Interface Philosophy is based on the proposition that interoperability must be designed into the engineering architecture from the beginning. Compatibility shall not depend upon improvised field modifications, undocumented assumptions, proprietary knowledge, or project-specific adapters.
System05 standardizes interaction without unnecessarily standardizing implementation.
Manufacturers and engineering organizations shall remain free to determine the internal materials, geometries, manufacturing processes, technologies, control systems, and performance strategies used within their products. This freedom shall continue only to the extent that the product preserves the declared interface and satisfies all applicable safety, compatibility, performance, and evidence requirements.
An interface shall therefore function as an engineering promise. Each participating component declares what it provides, what it requires, what conditions it can tolerate, how it behaves under normal and abnormal conditions, and how its compatibility can be verified.
Interface standardization shall be sufficiently precise to prevent ambiguity but sufficiently neutral to accommodate innovation. Specifications shall define everything necessary to protect interoperability and safety while avoiding restrictions that provide no platform-level benefit.
Interfaces shall be designed for the complete building lifecycle. A connection that can be installed but cannot be inspected, released, replaced, upgraded, or digitally identified does not satisfy the full System05 interface philosophy unless its permanence is explicitly justified by engineering necessity.
Every interface shall be understandable by humans and interpretable by machines. Human-readable documentation shall support engineers, manufacturers, installers, inspectors, maintainers, regulators, and occupants. Machine-readable definitions shall support design software, the Engineering Compiler, Building BIOS, Digital Twins, AI services, manufacturing equipment, inspection systems, and construction robots.
Interface behavior shall remain predictable under normal operation, maintenance activity, environmental exposure, partial failure, emergency conditions, and planned disconnection. Where an interface cannot remain operational, it shall transition toward a defined safe state.
The Interface Philosophy ultimately seeks to convert construction interfaces from informal project details into durable platform contracts capable of supporting multi-manufacturer interoperability across regions and technological generations.
