60. Forward Compatibility

Forward Compatibility is the ability of an existing interface or host to accept future components or capabilities without fundamental reconstruction.
Because future technology cannot be completely predicted, forward compatibility shall be supported through architectural provisions rather than unrestricted assumptions.
These provisions may include:
reserved physical space;
spare capacity;
standardized mounting zones;
replaceable adapter plates;
extensible data schemas;
reserved identifiers;
software capability discovery;
unused electrical or data contacts;
upgradeable control modules;
separable finishes;
accessible service pathways.
Forward-compatible interfaces shall safely reject unknown or unsupported functions. They shall not energize, command, unlock, pressurize, or authorize a future component solely because physical engagement is possible.
Optional or unknown digital fields shall be ignored only when the protocol explicitly permits safe omission. Unknown safety commands or operating states shall trigger rejection or a defined safe response.
Reserved capacity shall be documented. Statements such as “future-ready” shall not be made without identifying the actual space, load, power, communication, thermal, or utility provisions reserved.
Forward compatibility does not guarantee support for every future technology. It establishes controlled extension mechanisms intended to reduce unnecessary replacement of permanent building infrastructure.
