31. Cartridge Philosophy
A System05 Cartridge is a physically and digitally identifiable, bounded, replaceable engineering assembly that performs one or more defined functions through standardized interfaces.
The Cartridge is the principal mechanism through which System05 separates permanent building infrastructure from components that may require adaptation, maintenance, replacement, or technological upgrading.
A Cartridge is not simply a cover, connector, box, adapter, or equipment enclosure. To qualify as a System05 Cartridge, an assembly shall have:
a clearly defined engineering function;
one or more standardized external interfaces;
a controlled physical boundary;
a unique digital identity;
declared capabilities and operating limits;
a defined installation and release process;
compatibility and evidence records;
an inspection and maintenance strategy;
a lifecycle state;
an approved failure and safe-disconnection behavior.
The Cartridge Architecture shall permit different manufacturers to develop alternative internal implementations while maintaining compatibility at the external interface.
The Cartridge acts as a controlled translation layer. It may translate:
a local structural material into a universal Node interface;
building utilities into a replaceable functional panel;
electrical power into the voltage required by equipment;
raw sensor signals into standardized digital data;
proprietary equipment communication into a System05 protocol;
human commands into controlled machine actions;
future technology into an existing building generation.
Cartridges shall be used where separation creates meaningful value. They shall not be added indiscriminately where a permanent direct connection is safer, simpler, more affordable, and equally maintainable.
A Cartridge shall not conceal unresolved incompatibility. Any adaptation performed inside the Cartridge shall remain documented, verifiable, inspectable, and traceable.
The expected service life of the Cartridge may differ from the service life of the building. The Cartridge boundary shall therefore allow the shorter-life component to be replaced without unnecessary destruction of the longer-life host system.
System05 distinguishes between the Cartridge Architecture, which defines the universal rules, and a Cartridge Product, which is a specific manufactured implementation.
