39. Smart Cartridge

A Smart Cartridge contains embedded computation, digital identity, communication, and state awareness sufficient to participate actively in the System05 digital platform.
At minimum, a Smart Cartridge shall be able to:
identify itself;
expose its Capability Declaration;
report its current state;
provide diagnostic information;
communicate relevant lifecycle events;
support authenticated configuration;
preserve or retrieve required configuration data.
Depending upon its role, it may additionally perform:
local data processing;
anomaly detection;
optimization;
predictive maintenance;
autonomous control within defined limits;
coordination with other Cartridges;
secure software updates;
local operation during network loss.
A Smart Cartridge shall not claim authority merely because it has computational capability. Its permitted actions shall be defined by the Building BIOS, Interface Contract, safety architecture, and current authorization.
The Cartridge shall distinguish among:
manufacturer firmware;
certified control logic;
configurable parameters;
learned or adaptive behavior;
externally supplied commands;
AI-generated recommendations.
Updates affecting safety, compatibility, performance, or control authority shall require version control and, where applicable, revalidation or recertification.
The Cartridge shall define behavior during:
loss of power;
loss of communication;
corrupted data;
failed authentication;
sensor disagreement;
incomplete update;
processor failure;
clock or synchronization failure.
Cloud connectivity shall not be required for immediate safety functions unless a specific, evidence-supported architecture permits it.
The Smart Cartridge computing stack, minimum local memory, communication standards, secure-boot requirements, and update architecture remain TBD.
