5. Interface Boundaries

An interface boundary is the formally declared separation between two or more engineering entities. It identifies where the authority, responsibility, performance, and evidence obligations of one entity end and those of another entity begin.
Interface boundaries may exist between components, assemblies, Cartridges, Nodes, structural members, utility networks, control systems, software services, buildings, infrastructure systems, human operators, and external environments.
Every boundary shall define the participating sides of the interface. Each side shall possess a distinct identity and a declared role. Where more than two parties participate, the specification shall define their relationships without assuming a simple one-to-one connection.
A boundary shall be represented physically and digitally. The physical boundary identifies the geometry, contact surfaces, clearances, engagement zones, connection points, exclusion zones, and environmental separation associated with the interface. The digital boundary identifies data ownership, communication endpoints, access authority, command rights, validation responsibilities, and cybersecurity controls.
Interface boundaries shall be defined at an appropriate level of abstraction. A boundary shall not be so broad that responsibilities become ambiguous, nor so narrow that the system becomes burdened by unnecessary fragmentation and administrative complexity.
The location of a boundary shall consider construction sequence, manufacturing responsibility, transportation, installation, testing, inspection, maintenance, replacement, upgrading, and decommissioning. Boundaries established only for initial assembly may create unacceptable lifecycle dependencies.
Where an interface crosses multiple physical layers, each transition shall be coordinated. Structural continuity, air barriers, moisture barriers, thermal insulation, fire separation, acoustic control, electrical bonding, data communication, and finish systems shall not be treated as unrelated details when they intersect at the same boundary.
The boundary definition shall identify all conditions that may influence interaction, including dimensional tolerances, movement allowances, environmental exposure, access constraints, service clearances, operating loads, temporary construction conditions, and foreseeable changes over time.
Hidden boundary conditions shall be avoided. Where concealed conditions are unavoidable, the interface shall provide suitable evidence, sensing, test access, inspection methods, or installation verification to confirm correct engagement and continued performance.
No participating component shall extend its authority across an interface boundary without an explicitly defined agreement. A device shall not assume command authority, structural restraint, electrical supply, data ownership, or environmental protection unless the interface contract assigns that responsibility.
