97. Protective Separation and Distance Monitoring

Where physical separation is used, the robotic system shall maintain sufficient distance to stop or reach a safe condition before a person can enter the hazardous envelope.
The required protective separation shall consider:
- Human approach speed.
- Robot speed and acceleration.
- Sensor detection time.
- Control-system reaction time.
- Mechanical stopping time.
- Payload swing or deflection.
- Tool and component geometry.
- Localization and measurement uncertainty.
- Communication delay.
- Surface condition and robot stability.
Distance monitoring shall use the complete swept volume of the robot, tool, payload, cables, hoses, and foreseeable displaced materials.
As separation decreases, the system may progressively reduce speed, restrict motion, enter a protective stop, or activate an emergency response according to the approved safety profile.
The system shall not assume that a detected person will move predictably or respond correctly to an alert.
Restart after a separation violation shall require confirmation that all persons have left the hazardous envelope and that no object, component, tool, or temporary support was disturbed during the event.
