30. Fastening and Joining Interfaces

Fastening and joining operations shall be designed for predictable access, controlled execution, inspection, and future disassembly where required.
Applicable methods may include:
- Bolts.
- Screws.
- Pins.
- Rivets.
- Clamps.
- Wedges.
- Mechanical locks.
- Adhesives.
- Welding.
- Brazing.
- Sealing.
- Composite bonding.
Robot-compatible fasteners should provide:
- Standardized tool engagement.
- Captive or retained placement where practical.
- Clear approach direction.
- Reduced risk of cross-threading.
- Controlled seating.
- Traceable torque, tension, displacement, or energy.
- Visible or measurable completion state.
- Accessible inspection.
- Controlled removal.
The fastening specification shall distinguish between tool completion and joint acceptance. Reaching a target torque may not be sufficient when friction, contamination, damaged threads, material crushing, or incomplete seating can produce misleading results.
Joining processes shall define:
- Surface preparation.
- Environmental limits.
- Process parameters.
- Inspection method.
- Cure or cooling requirements.
- Release conditions.
- Repair method.
- Disassembly limitations.
Permanent joining shall not be used where lifecycle replacement is constitutionally required unless an approved replaceable subassembly or alternative service method is provided.
