33. Robotic Tool-Changing Architecture

Robotic tool changing shall support safe, verifiable, and efficient transition among different task capabilities.
A tool-changing system may provide:
- Standardized mechanical coupling.
- Automatic locking.
- Tool identity.
- Power connection.
- Data connection.
- Pneumatic or hydraulic connection.
- Fluid sealing.
- Tool Center Point registration.
- Lock-state sensing.
- Tool-presence sensing.
- Protective storage.
The tool-change sequence shall verify:
- Robot and tool compatibility.
- Tool-station identity.
- Correct approach.
- Mechanical seating.
- Coupler locking.
- Power and communication connection.
- Tool identity.
- Calibration validity.
- Functional test.
- Safe release from the station.
A robot shall not use a tool merely because the coupler reports mechanical engagement. The control system shall verify that the expected tool identity and configuration match the authorized work package.
Tool stations shall protect unused tools from impact, contamination, weather, unauthorized access, and accidental activation.
Loss of power or communication shall not cause uncontrolled tool release. Manual recovery and emergency removal procedures shall be provided.
