96. Human Presence Detection

Robotic systems operating near people shall provide a qualified method for detecting relevant human presence.
Detection may use:
- Safety-rated scanners.
- Light curtains.
- Pressure-sensitive surfaces.
- Gate and barrier interlocks.
- Wearable devices.
- Vision systems.
- Radar or other proximity sensing.
- Qualified combinations of independent methods.
The design shall account for full-body and partial-body detection, crouching, climbing, occlusion, reflective clothing, carried objects, children, mobility devices, and persons lying or working near the floor.
Detection coverage, blind regions, response time, environmental limitations, and diagnostic behavior shall be documented.
General-purpose AI vision may provide useful contextual awareness, but it shall not serve as the sole protective measure for a high-consequence operation unless specifically qualified for that function.
Failure, obstruction, misalignment, or loss of required presence-detection coverage shall cause a conservative response.
Worker wearables shall supplement rather than replace site controls unless the complete safety architecture has specifically qualified dependence on them. A forgotten, discharged, or damaged wearable shall not make a person invisible to the protective system.
