21. Robotic Access Faces

A Robotic Access Face is a defined physical region through which a robot may approach, observe, grasp, insert, fasten, inspect, unlock, or remove a component.
Each relevant access face should define:
- Location and orientation.
- Coordinate reference.
- Permitted approach directions.
- Minimum clearance.
- Tool classes.
- Allowable contact areas.
- Prohibited contact areas.
- Visibility requirements.
- Lighting or marker requirements.
- Required work envelope.
- Environmental limitations.
- Human-access requirements.
- Conditions under which access may be obstructed.
A component may have separate access faces for:
- Handling.
- Installation.
- Fastening.
- Inspection.
- Utility connection.
- Maintenance.
- Removal.
An access face shall not be treated merely as an exposed surface. It is a controlled interface zone with defined geometry, function, state, and access requirements.
Finishes, insulation, fire protection, utilities, furniture, landscaping, or later alterations shall not obstruct a required access face unless an approved alternate method is provided.
Where an access face is normally covered, the cover should be identifiable, removable, replaceable, and represented in the Building BIOS and Digital Twin. Access procedures shall protect occupants, finishes, environmental seals, and adjacent systems.
