41. Manufacturing Definition Architecture
System05 shall establish a governed Manufacturing Definition Architecture that transforms approved engineering intent into executable, inspectable, traceable, and releasable production information.
The Manufacturing Definition shall serve as the authoritative bridge between:
- Building Definition Language.
- Engineering Compiler outputs.
- approved product design.
- manufacturing planning.
- factory execution.
- quality assurance.
- production evidence.
- product release.
- the As-Manufactured Record.
- Building BIOS and Digital Twin updates.
The Manufacturing Definition shall not be treated as a single drawing, CAD model, process sheet, or machine file. It shall be an integrated and version-controlled system of related manufacturing objects, requirements, relationships, states, authorities, and evidence.
Its purpose shall be to answer, without uncontrolled interpretation:
- What shall be manufactured?
- Which configuration is authorized?
- Which characteristics are critical?
- From which materials and components shall it be produced?
- Which processes may be used?
- In what sequence shall operations occur?
- Which machines, tools, fixtures, software, skills, and environmental conditions are required?
- What evidence shall be generated?
- Which deviations are permitted?
- Who possesses authority to approve each consequential decision?
- What constitutes completion, acceptance, release, and reconciliation?
The architecture shall maintain continuity from design intent to physical production. Every consequential manufacturing requirement shall be traceable to an engineering, compatibility, safety, quality, regulatory, lifecycle, or production need.
Manufacturing information shall not be added merely because it is customary, and required information shall not be omitted merely because experienced personnel are expected to understand it.
The Manufacturing Definition Architecture shall contain at least the following coordinated layers:
- Engineering Intent Layer.
- Product Definition Layer.
- Process Definition Layer.
- Resource Definition Layer.
- Quality and Evidence Layer.
- Production Execution Layer.
- Configuration and Change-Control Layer.
- As-Manufactured and Reconciliation Layer.
The Engineering Intent Layer shall identify the governing product function, performance requirements, Interface obligations, applicable Engineering Profiles, safety boundaries, critical characteristics, lifecycle requirements, and approved configuration space.
The Product Definition Layer shall describe the authorized physical and functional product, including:
- Product identity.
- product family and variant.
- geometry.
- dimensions.
- tolerances.
- materials.
- finishes.
- Interfaces.
- components and subassemblies.
- embedded devices.
- software or firmware where applicable.
- acceptance characteristics.
The Process Definition Layer shall describe how the product is intended to be produced, including:
- Manufacturing operations.
- operation sequence.
- setup requirements.
- process parameters.
- permitted parameter ranges.
- intermediate product states.
- inspection points.
- hold points.
- rework paths.
- completion conditions.
The Resource Definition Layer shall identify the capabilities necessary to perform the process, including:
- Equipment.
- machines.
- tooling.
- fixtures.
- gauges.
- robots.
- software.
- utilities.
- facility conditions.
- personnel qualifications.
- required skills.
- calibration and maintenance conditions.
The Quality and Evidence Layer shall define how conformity will be demonstrated. It shall identify:
- Inspection characteristics.
- measurement methods.
- sampling requirements.
- acceptance rules.
- test requirements.
- process-monitoring requirements.
- evidence formats.
- evidence retention.
- review authority.
- final release requirements.
The Production Execution Layer shall translate the approved definition into controlled production orders, travelers, work packages, digital work instructions, resource assignments, and production-state transitions.
The Configuration and Change-Control Layer shall ensure that the correct product, process, resource, software, and quality definitions remain synchronized throughout production. It shall govern:
- Baselines.
- revisions.
- effectivity.
- substitutions.
- deviations.
- concessions.
- temporary instructions.
- engineering changes.
- production-impact assessments.
- requalification requirements.
The As-Manufactured and Reconciliation Layer shall record what was actually produced rather than merely what was planned. It shall preserve actual:
- Materials and material lots.
- component versions.
- process routes.
- machines and tools.
- process parameters.
- operators or robots.
- inspection results.
- rework and repair.
- deviations and concessions.
- final configuration.
- release decisions.
- product genealogy.
Planned, authorized, executed, measured, accepted, and released conditions shall remain distinguishable. A planned operation shall not be represented as completed, and completion shall not be represented as acceptance without the required evidence and authority.
The architecture shall support Build-to-Definition, Build-to-Performance, and Hybrid Production.
For Build-to-Definition characteristics, the Manufacturing Definition shall preserve the approved prescriptive requirements and prevent unauthorized alteration.
For Build-to-Performance characteristics, the manufacturer may create proprietary manufacturing definitions, provided that the resulting configuration, process controls, qualification evidence, Interface requirements, and performance obligations remain governed and traceable.
For Hybrid Production, standardized and safety-critical characteristics shall remain protected while manufacturers retain controlled freedom over internal design and production methods.
The applicable production-control model may differ among characteristics within the same product. Each characteristic shall therefore identify whether it is:
- Prescriptively controlled.
- performance controlled.
- Interface controlled.
- process controlled.
- manufacturer defined.
- project configurable.
- regionally constrained.
- The Manufacturing Definition shall distinguish authoritative information from derived information.
Authoritative information may include approved:
- Engineering requirements.
- Interface specifications.
- product models.
- material specifications.
- acceptance criteria.
- process limits.
- configuration rules.
- release conditions.
Derived information may include:
- Shop drawings.
- flat patterns.
- nesting plans.
- toolpaths.
- robot programs.
- work instructions.
- inspection programs.
- production schedules.
- material allocations.
Derived information shall remain traceably linked to the authoritative source from which it was generated. Editing a derived artifact shall not silently modify the authoritative definition.
Where an approved change affects an authoritative source, dependent manufacturing artifacts shall be identified, reviewed, regenerated where necessary, and re-released before continued use.
The architecture shall support human-readable and machine-readable representations. Machine readability shall not eliminate the need for understandable engineering meaning, and human-readable documents shall not become uncontrolled alternatives to the governed digital definition.
Information exchanged among BDL, the Engineering Compiler, CAD, CAM, MES, ERP, QMS, metrology systems, robots, supplier systems, the Building BIOS, and the Digital Twin shall preserve:
- Object identity.
- semantic meaning.
- units.
- coordinate systems.
- version.
- configuration.
- authority.
- effectivity.
- state.
- evidence relationships.
- A successful file transfer shall not alone establish semantic compatibility.
The Manufacturing Definition Architecture shall support multiple factory scales and regional production capabilities. The same engineering product may have different qualified manufacturing routes, provided that each route preserves applicable product, Interface, quality, evidence, and lifecycle requirements.
Factory-specific information may define:
- Available processes.
- equipment capability.
- local material sources.
- automation level.
- labor organization.
- inspection resources.
- facility limitations.
- regional regulatory requirements.
Factory-specific adaptation shall not silently weaken globally standardized Interfaces, safety requirements, protected critical characteristics, or certification conditions.
The architecture shall define controlled release gates between major states, including:
- Engineering definition approved.
- manufacturing planning authorized.
- resources qualified.
- production package released.
- production order issued.
- manufacturing completed.
- inspection completed.
- nonconformances resolved.
- final product released.
- As-Manufactured Record reconciled.
- No release gate shall be passed solely because production must meet a schedule.
The Manufacturing Definition shall be sufficiently complete for a competent authorized producer to execute the work without relying on undocumented assumptions. At the same time, it shall avoid unnecessary prescription where manufacturers retain legitimate freedom of implementation.
System05 shall therefore treat the Manufacturing Definition Architecture as a living digital control structure connecting engineering intent, production reality, and lifecycle information.
The final objective shall not be merely to create production documents. It shall be to preserve an unbroken and auditable digital thread proving that the released physical product corresponds to the authorized System05 engineering configuration.
