19. Simplicity, Robustness and Appropriate Automation

System05 shall prefer the simplest production solution that reliably satisfies engineering, quality, safety, capacity, and evidence requirements.
Simplicity may be achieved through:
- Fewer parts.
- common features.
- self-locating geometry.
- passive error prevention.
- standard tools.
- visible state.
- accessible inspection.
- modular fixtures.
- reduced setup complexity.
- clear work instructions.
- stable process windows.
Robust production shall tolerate expected variation in:
- Materials.
- operators.
- equipment.
- environment.
- tool wear.
- incoming dimensions.
- regional resources.
- production volume.
Tolerance of variation shall not mean acceptance of uncontrolled output. Robustness shall keep output within declared requirements despite foreseeable input variation.
Automation shall be justified by measurable benefits such as:
- Improved safety.
- repeatability.
- capacity.
- traceability.
- precision.
- reduced physical burden.
- reduced waste.
- lower lifecycle cost.
- Automation shall not be introduced solely for technological appearance or investor presentation.
Systems shall avoid unnecessary dependence on constant cloud connectivity, proprietary services, rare expertise, or fragile equipment when local and maintainable alternatives can provide adequate performance.
Manual fallback should be retained where practical, especially for recovery, maintenance, low-volume production, and resource-constrained regions.
Appropriate automation may range from a simple fixture or torque-controlled tool to a fully automated production cell.
