24. Design for Inspection and Measurement

System05 products shall be designed so that critical characteristics can be verified using practical, reliable, and proportionate methods.
Design for Inspection shall provide:
- Accessible measurement surfaces.
- defined datums.
- clear feature boundaries.
- gauge access.
- sensor line of sight.
- inspection openings.
- reference targets.
- visible condition indicators.
- retained evidence locations.
- nondestructive examination access where required.
Critical characteristics shall not be placed in permanently hidden locations unless their conformity can be established through qualified process control, indirect measurement, embedded sensing, or representative destructive testing.
The design definition shall identify:
- What must be measured.
- when it must be measured.
- required accuracy.
- acceptance limits.
- applicable datum.
- surface condition.
- environmental condition.
- measurement method where necessary.
Measurement requirements shall account for uncertainty. Tolerances shall not be specified so tightly that available measurement systems cannot make reliable acceptance decisions.
Inspection features should serve multiple production methods and factory scales where practical. Specialized metrology may be required for high-criticality products, but unnecessary dependence on expensive equipment shall be avoided.
The design shall support inspection after:
- Manufacturing.
- transportation.
- assembly.
- damage.
- repair.
- lifecycle service.
- Inspection access shall not compromise structural, fire, moisture, security, or architectural performance.
Where digital inspection is used, the design shall support registration between measured data and the correct product identity, version, datum system, and physical location.
