32. Interface Manufacturability

System05 Interfaces shall be designed as manufacturable conformance boundaries rather than idealized geometric abstractions.
Interface manufacturability shall define:
- Functional surfaces.
- primary and secondary datums.
- tolerance zones.
- alignment features.
- lead-in geometry.
- capture regions.
- locking features.
- load-transfer surfaces.
- sealing surfaces.
- tool access.
- inspection access.
- marking locations.
The Interface shall accommodate realistic production and assembly variation while preventing unacceptable looseness, binding, false engagement, or load-path uncertainty.
Interface characteristics shall be measurable through practical methods such as:
- Reference gauges.
- coordinate measurement.
- optical scanning.
- functional fit checks.
- force or torque testing.
- surface measurement.
- verified reference artifacts.
Functional gauges may be used to confirm combined behavior but shall not conceal which critical characteristic failed when diagnostic information is required.
Surface texture, coating thickness, edge condition, burrs, contamination, and deformation shall be controlled where they affect engagement or load transfer.
Interface designs should avoid manufacturing features that require unnecessary undercuts, inaccessible machining, fragile edges, or specialized tools without corresponding value.
The Interface specification shall identify which characteristics are globally standardized and which remain manufacturer-defined.
No manufacturer shall redefine a standardized Interface feature through private shop practice.
