35. Manufacturing-Oriented Material Selection

Material selection shall consider manufacturing capability and lifecycle behavior in addition to nominal engineering performance.
Evaluation shall include:
- Availability.
- source consistency.
- form and dimensions.
- machinability.
- formability.
- castability.
- weldability.
- bondability.
- cure behavior.
- dimensional stability.
- surface treatment.
- inspection.
- repair.
- recycling.
- regional supply.
Material variability shall be characterized. Natural and regionally sourced materials may require grading, conditioning, testing, or broader design accommodation.
Material selection shall account for production effects such as:
- Residual stress.
- heat-affected zones.
- distortion.
- fiber orientation.
- voids.
- porosity.
- shrinkage.
- moisture movement.
- cure gradients.
- anisotropy.
- coating interaction.
Multi-material systems shall evaluate galvanic corrosion, differential thermal movement, moisture trapping, bond compatibility, fire behavior, and end-of-life separation.
A material shall not be selected solely because it performed adequately in one prototype if routine supply and process consistency are unknown.
Alternative materials may be qualified through governed Engineering Profiles when they satisfy the applicable function, Interface, evidence, and lifecycle requirements.
Material specifications shall identify critical condition requirements such as grade, temper, moisture content, heat treatment, fiber architecture, cure state, recycled content, or surface preparation.
