34. Utility and Smart-Module Manufacturability

Utility components and Smart Modules shall be designed for modular production, safe integration, service access, replacement, and future upgrade.
Applicable systems may include:
- Electrical distribution.
- data communication.
- water.
- drainage.
- ventilation.
- heating and cooling.
- sensing.
- control.
- security.
- energy storage.
- building intelligence.
- Manufacturing shall control separation among structural, electrical, fluid, thermal, and data functions.
Utility Interfaces shall prevent incorrect connection through geometry, keying, identity, labeling, state verification, or other error-prevention measures.
Smart Modules should use serviceable, replaceable architectures rather than permanently embedding rapidly obsolete electronics into long-life structural components.
A centralized Node Smart Module may receive signals from distributed sensing locations through defined conductors, channels, mechanical indicators, optical paths, or other qualified methods.
Module manufacturing shall address:
- Environmental protection.
- power supply.
- battery replacement.
- connector durability.
- firmware identity.
- cybersecurity.
- calibration.
- sensor replacement.
- heat dissipation.
- electromagnetic compatibility.
- data integrity.
- The installed module shall identify which sensing channels are present, absent, degraded, or unsupported.
- Utility and Smart Module manufacturing shall preserve safe manual operation and maintenance where practical.
A software or firmware update shall not silently alter physical safety behavior, sensor meaning, Interface state interpretation, or protected Building BIOS information.
