28. Mass Customization and Late Configuration

System05 shall support mass customization by separating stable platform production from controlled configuration choices.
Customization may include:
- Dimensions within approved ranges.
- capacity.
- material.
- finish.
- environmental protection.
- Interface options.
- utility functions.
- sensing packages.
- regional requirements.
- architectural appearance.
Customization rules shall be machine-readable where practical and shall prevent incompatible or unverified combinations.
Late configuration should be used when it reduces inventory, improves responsiveness, or supports regional adaptation without compromising traceability or quality.
Late-configured characteristics shall have defined:
- Permitted options.
- decision authority.
- configuration point.
- process instructions.
- inspection requirements.
- identity updates.
- compatibility checks.
A generic base product shall not be represented as a finished certified configuration before required options are installed and verified.
Customization shall not extend into uncontrolled redesign. Options outside the approved configuration space shall be treated as new engineering changes or product variants.
The Manufacturing Definition shall distinguish:
- Fixed characteristics.
- configurable characteristics.
- project-specified parameters.
- regionally constrained options.
- prohibited combinations.
Final product identity and evidence shall describe the actual configuration produced rather than only the generic platform.
