26. Design for Modular and Independent Production

System05 products shall be decomposed into modules that can be produced, inspected, replaced, upgraded, and sourced independently where this creates lifecycle or ecosystem value.
Modular production shall use defined boundaries for:
- Geometry.
- Interfaces.
- responsibilities.
- materials.
- tolerances.
- testing.
- identity.
- evidence.
- assembly.
- replacement.
A module should not require disclosure of unrelated proprietary internal information from another manufacturer to establish compatibility.
Independent production shall support:
- Multiple suppliers.
- regional manufacturing.
- parallel production.
- product-family evolution.
- repair.
- remanufacture.
- capacity sharing.
- supply-chain resilience.
Modularity shall not be pursued where additional Interfaces, fasteners, seals, or tolerances create disproportionate failure risk, cost, weight, or inspection burden.
The design shall identify which modules are:
- Permanent.
- replaceable.
- sacrificial.
- serviceable.
- upgradeable.
- configuration-specific.
Interfaces between independently manufactured modules shall allocate tolerances and responsibilities explicitly. Ambiguous overlap or unowned gaps shall be prohibited.
A module shall be testable at the lowest practical level before integration. However, module-level acceptance shall not eliminate required verification of the integrated assembly.
Configuration records shall identify the actual module versions installed in each assembly.
