39. Joining, Fastening, Sealing and Surface Requirements

Joining, fastening, sealing, and surface requirements shall be designed as integrated manufacturing characteristics.
Joining methods may include:
- Mechanical fastening.
- welding.
- brazing.
- soldering.
- adhesive bonding.
- interference fit.
- mechanical interlock.
- overmolding.
- composite co-curing.
- hybrid joining.
Each joint shall define:
- Intended load path.
- preparation.
- materials.
- process.
- access.
- sequence.
- acceptance criteria.
- inspection.
- repair.
- disassembly behavior where applicable.
Fasteners shall be selected for capacity, installation control, corrosion compatibility, fire behavior, tool access, replacement, and prevention of incorrect substitution.
Torque alone shall not always be treated as proof of preload or connection completion. Where consequential, the verification method shall reflect actual joint behavior.
Adhesive and bonded joints shall control surface preparation, material condition, mix ratio, application time, cure conditions, storage life, and witness evidence.
Seals shall account for joint movement, surface condition, compression, aging, moisture, chemicals, temperature, replacement, and inspection.
Surface requirements may include:
- Texture.
- cleanliness.
- flatness.
- coating.
- plating.
- corrosion protection.
- fire protection.
- bond preparation.
- wear resistance.
- electrical continuity or isolation.
Coatings and finishes shall not obstruct Interface engagement, datum contact, identification, sensing, grounding, inspection, or future disassembly.
Hidden joints and seals shall be verified before access is closed.
