10. Build-to-Definition, Build-to-Performance and Hybrid Production

System05 shall recognize three primary production-control models: Build-to-Definition, Build-to-Performance, and Hybrid Production.
Under Build-to-Definition, the producer shall manufacture the product according to a controlled prescriptive definition that may specify:
- Geometry.
- dimensions.
- tolerances.
- material grade.
- heat treatment.
- joining method.
- surface treatment.
- inspection method.
- identification.
- permitted process parameters.
- The producer shall not depart from the definition without an approved change, deviation, or concession.
Under Build-to-Performance, the producer may develop its own internal design and manufacturing method while demonstrating that the resulting product satisfies defined performance, Interface, evidence, and lifecycle requirements.
Performance requirements may include:
- Structural capacity.
- stiffness.
- energy dissipation.
- fatigue life.
- fire performance.
- environmental resistance.
- sealing.
- durability.
- electromagnetic compatibility.
- replacement behavior.
- robotic compatibility.
Build-to-Performance shall not remove the need for controlled configuration. The tested and approved product configuration shall be clearly identified, and production units shall remain representative of that configuration.
Hybrid Production shall combine prescribed requirements for critical or shared characteristics with performance-based freedom for internal implementation.
System05 products should generally use a hybrid approach:
- Standardized Interface requirements.
- Defined safety and compatibility boundaries.
- Controlled critical characteristics.
- Independent internal innovation.
- Performance-based qualification.
- Traceable production evidence.
The applicable production model shall be identified in the Manufacturing Definition. Different characteristics of the same product may use different models.
A manufacturer shall not claim performance-based freedom for a characteristic that has been constitutionally standardized for interoperability.
Where compliance depends on testing, the relationship between tested specimens and routine production shall be established through material controls, process controls, inspection, surveillance, and configuration management.
