Commonality should be pursued for:
- Fastener families.
- Interface features.
- datum locations.
- tool engagement.
- gauges.
- replacement elements.
- identification methods.
- packaging.
- work instructions.
- Every unique part or feature should have a justified function.
Design reviews shall identify opportunities to remove:
- Redundant fasteners.
- duplicate brackets.
- unnecessary adapters.
- cosmetic complexity.
- inaccessible secondary operations.
- unique tools.
- avoidable material transitions.
Simplification shall preserve required redundancy and safety. Removing a component that provides independent load path, sealing, fire protection, error prevention, or inspection evidence shall require engineering assessment.
The preferred design shall achieve functional richness through platform architecture and controlled configuration rather than uncontrolled multiplication of unique parts.
