27. Product Platforms, Families and Variants

System05 manufacturing shall organize related products into governed platforms, families, and variants.
A product platform shall contain stable architectural elements shared across multiple products, such as:
- Interface geometry.
- datum system.
- locking principles.
- digital identity structure.
- inspection logic.
- robotic handling features.
- evidence schemas.
A product family shall include products derived from the same governed architecture but differentiated by declared characteristics such as:
- Capacity.
- dimensions.
- material.
- environmental class.
- fire rating.
- surface treatment.
- regional profile.
- sensing capability.
- A variant shall represent a controlled option within a product family.
Variant management shall prevent uncontrolled combinations. Each permitted combination shall be defined through rules, configuration tables, or machine-readable constraints.
Common part numbers shall not be used for materially different products. Differences affecting compatibility, performance, installation, inspection, or service shall remain visible.
Product-family design should maximize common:
- Tooling.
- fixtures.
- gauges.
- work instructions.
- training.
- inspection methods.
- packaging.
- replacement parts.
Platform evolution shall preserve backward compatibility where practical. When compatibility cannot be preserved, the new version and transition requirements shall be explicit.
A product-family extension shall undergo impact assessment to confirm that shared evidence remains applicable. Similar appearance or shared geometry shall not automatically transfer certification or manufacturing qualification.
