36. Manufacturing Process Selection

Manufacturing processes shall be selected through a documented evaluation of engineering requirements, capability, cost, scale, risk, regional availability, and lifecycle effects.
Process selection shall consider:
- Product geometry.
- material.
- tolerances.
- surface requirements.
- production volume.
- setup cost.
- tooling cost.
- cycle time.
- inspection burden.
- energy.
- waste.
- workforce competence.
- maintenance.
- supply resilience.
Candidate processes shall be evaluated for their effect on:
- Material properties.
- residual stress.
- distortion.
- fatigue.
- fracture.
- corrosion.
- fire behavior.
- bonding.
- dimensional stability.
- appearance.
- Processes may be combined when hybrid production provides better capability or affordability.
A process shall not be selected solely because it can create the required nominal shape. It shall demonstrate stable production of critical characteristics.
Special processes whose results cannot be fully verified through later inspection shall require qualification and controlled execution.
Process changes shall be evaluated for effect on existing design evidence, certification, inspection, repair, and lifecycle performance.
Regional process alternatives should be supported when they achieve equivalent required outcomes through qualified controls.
The chosen process architecture shall identify fallback options where supply interruption or equipment failure could materially affect production continuity.
