43. Openings and Penetrations

An Opening is an intentional void through or within a building Entity.
A Penetration is an Opening associated with a service, Component, Interface, or passage crossing a host assembly.
Each Opening or Penetration shall define:
identity;
host Entity;
geometry;
location;
orientation;
purpose;
required clearance;
installed sleeve or frame;
passing Entity;
structural effect;
fire and smoke requirements;
air and water sealing;
acoustic requirements;
inspection access;
closure status.

BDL shall distinguish:
proposed opening;
reserved opening;
factory-created opening;
field-created opening;
temporarily open penetration;
completed and sealed penetration;
abandoned penetration.
An Opening shall not be cut merely because it is geometrically representable. Structural, utility, safety, and manufacturing constraints shall be validated.
Openings affecting structural members or load paths shall reference the applicable engineering approval.
The closure system around a Penetration shall be modeled as an identifiable Component where its performance or inspection is critical.
