3. Purpose of BDL

The purpose of BDL is to create one consistent engineering language connecting design intent, physical implementation, digital configuration, and lifecycle evidence.
BDL shall enable:
unambiguous entity identification;
coordinated spatial representation;
explicit Interface and Cartridge definition;
machine-readable capability and dependency modeling;
unit-consistent engineering information;
automated compatibility checking;
Engineering Profile application;
configuration comparison;
manufacturing and assembly preparation;
BIOS configuration generation;
Digital Twin synchronization;
robotic task preparation;
lifecycle traceability.
BDL shall reduce dependence upon:
interpretation of drawing conventions;
manual transfer between disciplines;
implicit units;
duplicated component names;
undocumented assumptions;
proprietary model semantics;
disconnected schedules;
untraceable configuration changes.
The language shall make incomplete engineering information visible. It shall represent an unresolved value as unknown, assumed, estimated, or TBD rather than filling the value silently.
BDL shall support both early design and mature implementation. Early models may define required functions and constraints without selecting products. Later models may bind these requirements to specific Cartridge Instances and verified Interface connections.
